Leyland’s ‘Mad About Colour’ slogan came to life in spectacular fashion recently after its range of eye-catching colours helped bring a stunning piece of art bursting to life.
Artist Ian Cook creates jaw-dropping pieces using only the tyres of model cars and was recently commissioned by oil and car care company, Comma, in association with MSV race circuits to conjure up an eye-catching and innovative piece of art to be unveiled at leading motorsport venue Brands Hatch. The artwork was designed to launch a £2million motorsport ticket giveaway by Comma.
Leyland’s hugely successful sponsorship of leading British Touring Car Championship team Airwaves BMW caught Ian’s eye and he was compelled to include the colourful car, which includes Leyland’s attention-grabbing splashes of colour, on his awe-inspiring collage, which was completed to impressive dimensions of 10m x 5m.
Never ones to shy away from a daring project, Leyland happily donated 30 litres of Leyland Rave and Knight’s Rose paint so Ian could make his vision become a reality. Ian completed 95% of the project in his personal studio before adding the finishing flourishes at Brands Hatch, where real vehicles, including a Comma F2 car, a Caterham R300, a racing bike and a six tonne 1000bhp British racing truck, were used to drive over the canvas in different directions, spreading paint with their tyres to add an abstract finish to the background.
Speaking about his unique approach to art, Ian said: “The idea was sparked two years ago after I was bought a remote control car for Christmas. Ever since then I have tried to fully utilise the wheels of these cars to help bring my artistic vision to fruition.
“I’ve been aware of Leyland’s colourful sponsorship of Airwaves BMW and had little hesitation in approaching them to provide the wide range of colours needed to help bring this project to life. The artwork took over 40 hours to produce and was a unique project for me because the cars featured in the image were actually used to create the piece – the first time this has been done. To top it off the weather was glorious allowing the paint to dry perfectly!”
Leyland Brand Manager Nicki Hickman said: “We were delighted to add a splash of colour to this exciting project. Not only because it highlights how broad the colour solutions provided by Leyland are, but it also strengthens our already solid relationship with the high-octane world of motorsport. Our consumer presence has grown incredibly since undertaking our sponsorship of Airwaves BMW and long may it continue!”
