A turn of fortune for the Airwaves Racing team delivered the perfect blend of sunshine and success as a return to form at local track Brands Hatch got their Championship Challenge back on track with two podiums and a top ten finish for lead driver Mat Jackson.
Airwaves Racing suffered cruelly at the hands of fate once again this weekend at round 8 of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Rockingham Motor Speedway circuit. The Motorbase-run team who, coming into the weekend were leading the Independent teams and drivers’ Championships, and still very much in contention for the outright Championship have all but given up hope of clinching the overall honours.

Motorbase Performance will campaign Ford Focuses in the 2011 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship. The Kent squad will switch from the BMWs it has run for the past three seasons to field Focuses powered by Mountune-built Ford NGTC (Next Generation Touring Car) spec engines.

Airwaves BMW’s Mat Jackson fished the season’s last Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship qualifying session in 6th place on Brands Hatch’s GP circuit, affording the Warwickshireman every chance of clinching his first Independent Drivers championship. Steven Kane, who will start in 14th, sits just 18 points behind Tom Onslow-Cole who currently leads the Independent Drivers Standings.

Airwaves BMW have already confirmed a third car to be driven by experienced racer Ben Collins, formerly known as ‘The Stig’. This coming weekend the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship returns to Donington Park in the season’s penultimate race meeting, once again hosting the greatest motoring racing series in the UK. With Airwaves BMW drivers still in with a chance of clinching the Drivers, Independent and Teams Championships the team have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Airwaves BMW driver Steven Kane displayed some of the form which saw him dominate the podiums and top the Independent Drivers championship with 16 solid points at the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship races at Knockhill this weekend. Jackson was not far behind on 12 points in a day that will be remembered for the determined drives of both Jackson and Kane, and the bad luck which hampered both of them.
Steven Kane will start the first of tomorrow’s three races in fifth position in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship, after a cracking last few laps saw the Ulsterman stake his claim as a true title contender, finishing ahead of both the LPG turbo Fords in today’s qualifying session at Scotland’s Knockhill Racing Circuit.
The fortunes of Airwaves BMW were emphatically turned on their head at Silverstone today as Mat Jackson dipped into his reserve of talent to produce a spellbinding drive to take him from 10th to 3rd in the day’s final race, his fifth podium of the season. This result gives the team a fighting chance with just three more race meetings to go of winning their first Independent Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship.
In the first of today’s two Free Practice sessions, Mat Jackson held his own, securing an overall 3rd place finish with a time of 1.01.128. In one of the closest fort practices this season just 0.95 seconds separated the first seventeen drivers, with Steven Kane running a 1.01.636 to finish 13th. In usual fashion the session was led by Chilton’s awkwardly fast turbo charged Ford (1.01.084) followed swiftly by Jordan’s NGTC turbo specification Vauxhall Vectra (1.01.114).
A solid points haul at Snetterton reinstates Steven Kane as the leader of the Independent Drivers and Airwaves BMW the Independent Teams standings. This weekend, Northampton’s Silverstone circuit will play host to rounds 19/20/21 of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship; the outcome of which could dictate where this year’s top honours are heading.
With sandwiches cut, cold drinks packed and summer shorts on, tens of thousands of motoring fans poured into Norfolk’s Snetterton racetrack for rounds 16/17/18 of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship. It’s been a long time coming after the seven-week summer breather, and with the sun shining the day would be remembered for Jackson’s second place podium finish and a solid and respectable points haul for the team.
The return to the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship looked a decidedly grim affair as the session kicked off. After the seven-week summer break the eyes of the motoring world were firmly fixed on Snetterton, and the ominous dark grey clouds overhead.
